As one of numerous acts of major generosity in the Chelmsford area,
Mrs Lavinia Keene of Galleywood founded the Keene Homes estate
in memory of her late husband John Henry Keene,
 sometime Chairman of Pearl Assurance

The clock arch, staff accommodation and bungalows
 were completed in 1933, the flats being added in 1955
